What is a virus?

A virus is a program that loads itself on your computer without your knowledge. Viruses can replicate themselves, take over your system, degrade performance, destroy data and cause crashes. They can roam your network infecting other computers, sometimes within minutes. They typically are spread through infected emails and internet downloads. Maintaining control over your employee internet usage will help prevent some virus attacks.

What is SpyWare?

Spyware and adware covers a broad category of malicious software designed to take partial control of your computer's operation for the commercial benefit of a third party. Typical applications are loading pop up advertising, programs that steal personal information such as credit card numbers, monitoring web browsing, hijacking your home page and routing web page requests to advertising sites.

Even if you have anti-virus software you can be infected if you do not keep the software up to date.

Typical symptoms are:

• Missing data or your files look corrupted
• Being redirected to a different web site
• Your browser home page has mysteriously changed and your efforts to change it back does not work.
