Accessing the wrong web site can cost your business plenty

Many small businesses don't have a written internet policy guiding the actions of their employees. They leave it up to the good sense of each employee to determine what's acceptable and what isn't. That may be fine for some organizations, but not so good for others.

Lost productivity aside, personal use of the internet, and even some legitimate business uses, can expose companies in a number of ways. The internet is a common source of viruses, spyware and adware. Even sites that appear to be benign can be problematic.

Symantec, in its annual Internet Security Threat Report, warns that "attacks today are increasingly designed to silently steal data for profit without doing noticeable damage that would alert users". Using malicious code unknowingly downloaded from web sites, attackers are out to steal corporate, personal, financial or confidential information.

Improper Internet usage can expose your business to lawsuits and irreparable customer dissatisfaction.

A recent Harris survey shows that between 10 - 15% of employees access the internet for personal use on a daily basis. What one employee thinks is appropriate may be entirely different from another's viewpoint. There have even been successful sexual harassment lawsuits against companies who had no enforceable internet policy and had an employee who was viewing explicit material on their PC that was seen by another employee.
